DISTINGUISHING JOB CHARACTERISTICS
Under direct supervision of the Director of Instructional Technology, the Distance Education (DE) Support Specialist provides support and training for new and existing faculty for course design, development, and delivery guidance to ensure the quality assurance of the educational experience for students and faculty. The position provides support for learning strategies, educational technology, and student experience optimization for distance and face-to-face learning modalities. The DE Support Specialist has an emphasis on supporting faculty use of educational technology tools and facilitating the course review process for quality assurance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintains effective communication with Instructional Technology Committee, LMS Administrator, and Director of Instructional Technology.
Works collaboratively to assist faculty with various teaching strategies to enhance all modalities of course delivery.
Works closely with faculty to plan, design, and implement course materials for all teaching modalities (traditional, online, hybrid, etc.).
Advises faculty on the adoption of best practices and guidelines for accessibility and universal design.
Train and support instructors in the use of instructional technologies (i.e., Canvas, Zoom, Simple Syllabus), pedagogical and andragogical learning theories, and quality assurance.
Assists in managing and tracking the distance education development process, professional development, and quality assurance reviews.
Conducts quality assurance reviews using the Quality Matters® Higher Education Rubric.
Consult with faculty on recommended course improvements and revisions for quality assurance.
Create and modify existing educational resources in a variety of formats including print, audio, video.
Manage multiple, complex, projects simultaneously.
Participates in on-going analyses of technology and distance education needs in collaboration with the Instructional Technology Committee.
Remains current in topics and trends related to distance education and instructional technology.
Engages in other duties as assigned including but not limited to data analysis, instructional technology support, attending meetings and activities within SSCC, working with professional organizations.
Maintains confidentiality of confidential or sensitive records and information.
Works flexible schedule and exhibits regular and punctual attendance to meet workload demands.

Student and other information covered by FERPA guidelines and agreed to in the College’s FERPA Confidentiality Agreement including student transcripts, assessment results, course schedules and other student records.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Good office working conditions. The work requires the use of safe work practices with office equipment, and observance of general safety and traffic regulations.
Exposure to typical traffic conditions and hazards when visiting other campuses or other locations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently sits for extended periods of time and regularly stands and walks. The employee regularly exhibits manual dexterity when working on the computer, typing and performing other related tasks. The employee regularly talks and hears when working with students, staff, business representatives, members of the learning community and the general public. Vision demands include close, relatively detailed vision, with the ability to adjust focus when typing or reading a computer screen. The employee occasionally lifts up to 10 pounds.

QUALIFICATIONS
An appropriate combination of education, training, course work and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of an acceptable qualification is: Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design or Instructional Technology or similar field; 1 to 3 years of job related experience in Instructional Design or online instruction.
Experience using a Learning Management System (preferably Canvas), Microsoft Office, Quality Matters™, and other instructional technologies.
Applicant must successfully pass required background checks, in accordance with Southern State Community College’s policies and procedures and applicable laws.
Ability to document identity and employment eligibility as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements.
